Nice to Meet You, Caitlyn Jenner
Now that is how you break the internet. Caitlyn Jenner, formerly known as Bruce, debuted her new identity on the cover of Vanity Fair yesterday, and it’s all kinds of stunning. The full issue, with a photoshoot by Annie Leibovitz and cover story by Buzz Bissinger, won’t be available until June 9th, but the preview was enough to inspire over 1.5 million tweets on Twitter, many praising Jenner for her courage and beauty (inner and outer). Jenner also joined Twitter the same day and broke President Obama’s record to become the fastest person to reach one million followers, in four hours and three minutes. (As of this writing she has 2.04 million followers and counting.)Jenner, a former Olympian and reality television star, came out publicly as transgender in a widely lauded interview with Diane Sawyer in April. At the time, Jenner declined to share more specifics on her identity as a woman. The public level of acceptance and support around Jenner’s coming out makes this, quite simply, a watershed moment for transgender awareness and advocacy. Paris Lees at The Guardian called it “the most provocative and downright fabulous transition ever,” and we couldn’t agree more. With one photo, Caitlyn has changed the world—and more power to her for it.
