Are you going to Take The Lead?

Photo taken by Junelle BautistaLast night on Wednesday February 19th, ASU Gammage held an event about women empowerment called Take the Lead. The event featured speakers from all over the country that were there to “inspire and propel women to step into their own power.”People were also tuning in from 50 countries around the world through a live stream; and they could follow the event through Twitter and Facebook with the hashtag #takeleadlaunch.Photo of Carla Harris taken by Junelle BautistaThe first speaker, and my personal favorite, was Carla Harris. She was a loud and energetic, but extremely motivational, African American woman who told the audience about “Carla’s Pearls”, her rules to womanly success in the business industry. The one sentence she stressed to her audience was “Perception is the copilot to your reality”; basically saying: The way people perceive you is the most important thing in life. It doesn’t matter how talented you are; perception is key.The next segment of the night was a panel of women talking about women in the media; which included the dean of the Walter Cronkite School, Kristin Gilger. The ladies discussed women’s role in television, radio, sports broadcasting, and even video games. After the panel was done, Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook COO and author of Lean In, stepped in to give us her two cents on women empowerment.Hearing all of these powerful ladies speak about their successes and listening to their advice was so inspiring. Woman empowerment and domestic violence are both issues that are very understated in our society. Take the Lead is “preparing women to take their fair and equal share of leadership positions across all sectors by 2025.” If you’d like to follow their efforts to do so, go to
