I am confident in my capabilities as an executive leader, yet I know that as an advocate for equity in education and the workplace, I still have a lot to learn.

I will never forget the first time I walked into the room as a leader for an after school program; a student told me that what you know doesn’t matter if you aren’t here for us every day.

Showing up is so much more than being physically present; it is also listening to the needs of the people you serve.

Leading multi-generational teams continues to teach me that being a stranger to someone’s point of view is not a way to form alliances for a cause.

You must work with the people and not just from your sense of what it takes to empower others.

It is encouraging to see large amounts of funding going to institutions and organizations to support social justice and racial equity. However, the check should not mean that no one from the community is a part of the strategic planning and execution of the efforts.

The devastating impact of COVID-19 in Black and communities of color shows that representation matters even more. I sit at many tables of influence. I identify with the ability to connect with diverse people; yet it doesn’t mean I always have all of the answers to drive systematic change.
