I often wondered what life would be like if we saw God as a girl, a fierce and flawless female? I wondered when we would dismantle the mythology of a widowed God?

In my mind it was simple; gender inequality rested on the dogma that God was only male. I never believed it.

I felt called to bring the feminine face of God into the universal conversation. And I spent decades refusing that call. Why couldn't I do something easy like cure cancer? I waited for someone else.

Eventually, even the most reluctant must move from the ordinary. In 2008 I began my journey by leaving a career in TV and film and opening a Spiritual Center. A place to encourage spiritual diversity and provide members the opportunity to speak their truth.

I didn’t bring up the desire to have the Divine Mother at the helm. I kept that on the down-low. What would the men of our congregation think? A female-centric spiritual community felt too out there. I had no path, no role models, and little willingness—only well-branded images of witches burning at the stake. There is a reason that every successful religion genuflects to the masculine Divine. Power could be maintained by ensuring that priesthood, popedom and pulpits were off limits.

While ignoring my calling, the muffled moan of George Floyd rang a bell in me that could not be silenced. His murder gave birth to my conviction. On that day I added the words “Divine Mother” to our mission and movement and stepped into my calling. I was ready to offer a more inclusive spiritual landscape.

Answering the call is less about the one being called and more about those who are calling. I wish you courage in listening and replying to your own heart’s calling.
