The Power to Build Future Leaders Through Education

I was born to missionary parents living in Uganda, and some of my earliest memories were shaped by seeing communities facing extreme poverty. When we left the country as Idi Amin was coming to power, I remember making a quiet promise to myself that I would spend my life finding ways to help others and create meaningful change wherever I could.

I later became a teacher, and it quickly became clear to me that many highly motivated students were quietly being left behind. The education system was largely focused on helping students reach minimum standards, but I believed many students needed something more challenging, rigorous, and meaningful. That belief eventually became the foundation for Spirit of Math.

What started in the basement of my home with 35 students grew into a program serving students across Canada and internationally. But growth was never the real goal. I wanted to create an environment where students learned how to think critically, defend their reasoning, collaborate with others, and approach difficult problems with confidence.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned as a leader is that impact grows when you empower others. Expanding through franchising allowed us to bring that mission into more communities while still protecting the integrity of the program. It also pushed me to shift from trying to control everything myself toward building systems, developing leaders, and trusting people to carry the vision forward.

Today, what inspires me most is seeing former students become educators, mentors, engineers, and leaders in their own communities. That is the real purpose of education. It is not simply preparing students for exams. It is preparing them to think independently, contribute meaningfully, and help shape the future.
