Take The Lead salutes women who are doing extraordinary things in their communities. We will be recognizing women as part of our Women Like You Take The Lead campaign in the weeks leading up to the Take The Lead Challenge Launch Event on February 19th.

Shayla Price is also known by many as the “Scholarship Queen” due to the fact that she has helped more than 5,000 students apply for college scholarships. Shayla herself didn’t apply for any student loans when she went to college because she earned $100,000 for herself in scholarship money. Attributing to her tremendous self-determination and success in paying her own way through school, when Shayla was just 20 years old she published her book, The Scholarship Search: A Guide to Winning Free Money for College and More. This book provides aspiring college students with an invaluable resource of college preperation. “I make it a mission to inform individuals – students and parents – that scholarships are available for their education,” Shayla said.

As many students face the daunting task of applying to college, haunted by the fear of how much money it will cost them, Shayla is there reassuring them that funds don’t have to be a barrier between them and college. She is changing the narrative of paying for college from problem to solution. Shayla is now not only the first of her family to become a college graduate but she has also achieved her goal of becoming an Executive Director of a nonprofit: National Search Dog Alliance. In addition to everything else, in 2009, Shayla was honored as one of EBONY’s Young Leaders and received the first-ever Emerging Greatness Award from the National Black Women’s Town Hall. The White House (yes the White House) has also featured her on its blog series, Women Working to Do Good. No big deal. The heck with Waiting for Superman. SuperWOMAN has arrived, and her name is Shayla Price.
